World Poker Tour

World Poker TourWorld Poker Tour (WPT) is a weekly televised series of about 13 poker tournaments worldwide. Started in 2003 and airs on the Travel Channel, the TV program features real casino events and has helped poker and poker players to gain a wider audience.

Although WPT is relatively new to the poker world, it immediately became a household name associated with poker. When it first aired in March 2003, it gained an audience share of 900,000, and an estimated 1.1 viewers during the first World Poker Tour Championships.

In addition to the standard tournaments, WPT also holds a celebrity invitational tournament. This pits Hollywood celebrities against poker professionals. Not only is the tournament fun to watch, this also gives the stars a chance to win for their favorite charities as well as a seat to the WPT Championships.

WPT gives poker fans and novice players a peek on how the pros compete. Many of the show's features are viewer-friendly like the small cameras that show the players' hole cards; play-by-play commentaries, poker lingo definitions; screen display of percentages and how these percentages change as cards fall.

The growing popularity of WPT proves that poker is a spectator sport that can have a huge impact on the entertainment industry. The excitement and thrill of the tournaments are readily available to poker fans in the comfort of their homes.
